"Rabo de Cavalo" and "Maria-Chiquinha" - Idiom

Today's subject is hair! If you're a woman, you'll definitely find it useful to learn how to speak these two hairstyles that are so common in English: “ponytail” and “pigtails”. But learning new expressions is always useful for you men too!

First of all, it is worth remembering the difference between these two hairstyles: the ponytail consists of holding all the hair back, while the pigtails are parting the hair in the middle and making two tails, one on each side. And how do we say these hairstyles in Portuguese?

You may say "Rabo de Cavalo" for "Ponytail", and "Maria-chiquinha" for "Hairtail"

Let's see the examples:

1 –Ponytail:

Who? That girl with the glasses and the ponytail? Quem? Aquela garota de óculos e rabo de cavalo?

Will a young man with a ponytail have to cut it off? Um rapaz com rabo de cavalo precisará cortá-lo?

She usually wears her hair pulled back in a ponytail. Ela geralmente usa o cabelo puxado para trás em um rabo de cavalo.

Simply tie up your hair with a decorative scrunchie and your messy ponytail is instantly elevated. Simplesmente amarre o seu cabelo com um elástico decorativo e seu rabo de cavalo bagunçado melhorará instantaneamente.

Her long hair was swept back in a ponytail. O cabelo comprido dela estava puxado para trás em um rabo de cavalo.

Gloves are a good idea and be sure to tie long hair back into a ponytail. Luvas são uma boa ideia, e certifique-se de amarrar cabelos compridos para trás em um rabo de cavalo.

2 – Pigtails:

Who is that girl with pigtails? Quem é aquela garota de maria-chiquinha?

She had straight dark brown hair in pigtails. Ela tinha um cabelo castanho-escuro liso em maria-chiquinha.

That’s just some random woman who wears her hair in pigtails the way Michelle used to. Aquela é só uma mulher qualquer que prende o cabelo em maria-chiquinha da forma como a Michelle costumava prender.

A little girl in pigtails presented the bouquet. Uma menininha de maria-chiquinha entregou o buquê.

The April issue of the magazine featured a pop star in pigtails. A edição de abril da revista apresentava uma estrela do pop de maria-chiquinha.
